Express Your True Love through Shared Flavors

Watch how inspiring a sip of wine can be (Sideways, 2004)
Language doesn't always capture emotion effectively and that is why this scene from the movie Sideways always captivates me. The way Miles speaks about Pinot Noir is truly indicative of his passion and reverence for the delicate vintage. The only thing that tops his description of the wine is his willingness to share a vulnerable side of himself with someone; not just anyone, but the girl he finds he can't live without. There is nothing more transparent than sharing something valuable with the person you cherish most. Wine, food, and flavors in general are a language void of words but overflowing with intense emotion. From a lifetime of shared family meals and hundreds of first tastes, eating with loved ones is the ultimate expression of genuine love because there are no words to fumble over, no perfect outfits are required; there's just bite after bite of shared flavors and perhaps and extended arm rested across the table to encourage a little handholding which is the universal gesture of appreciation. This year, as we approach the overrated and mass-marketed month of love, skip the heart shaped chocolate boxes, overpriced flowers, and excursions to five star restaurants. Instead, make your Valentine a homemade meal to remember, play your favorite song, and highlight your evening with a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir. Give the gift of true love by sharing your favorite flavors with the one you love then compare it to the celebrations of years past. Don't be too shocked to find that while more money may have been spent during a lifetime of Valentines, it's the smaller hands-on evening that will top your list of most memorable moments.
